Join us as we compare the nutritional profiles of two of the most popular foods we eat today… Sweet potatoes vs. potatoes. (Okay, so that’s not really a blog post title, but can you blame me?)

We know a lot about the health benefits of fruits and vegetables, but are sweet potatoes just as good for us? A new study has found that they are one of the best foods for preventing heart disease. But are they also good for our waistline?

Sweet potato versus potato: A nutrition debate fuelled by misinformation, an unfounded obsession with superfoods and a phobia of carbohydrates. Here’s how these tubers compare and why they both deserve a place in your diet.

++++

A few years ago, a group of cooking enthusiasts decided to find out which potato – white or sweet – is the healthiest.

One group compared the glycemic index and load of sweet potatoes and potatoes. They suggested avoiding white potatoes because they have a higher index.

Another group claimed that sweet potatoes are a vitamin A superfood, putting them well ahead of the competition with white potatoes.

And of course, the enemies of carbs had their own take on the matter: All potatoes should be avoided because they contain too many carbohydrates, and all these carbohydrates interfere with insulin regulation and lead to fat gain.

This is nonsense.

White and sweet potatoes, when eaten as part of a balanced and thoughtful diet, provide a fantastic range of nutrients and contribute to the satiety and palatability of any meal.
